American auto giant Fiat Chrysler now finds itself in some hot water after
a manufacturing issue with one of its vehicles may have been responsible
for the death of a well-known actor. Anton Yelchin, perhaps best known
for his role as Ensign Chekov in the latest
Star Trek films, was killed after his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards
down his steep driveway and pinned him against a security gate on the property.
It is believed the accident may have been caused by the actor accidentally
leaving his vehicle in neutral while believing he had placed it in park.
This has produced confusion for Jeep Grand Cherokee owners who are struggling
to figure out if they have successfully put their vehicle in the correct gear.
This adds even more headache for the automaker who recently issued a massive
recall of over 800,000 vehicles who use the same gear selector system.
The system uses an unconventional stick which returns to a center position
after use, causing drivers to have to look down to see what gear they are in.
Fiat Chrysler, who also produce the Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati
brands in addition to Fiat and Chrysler, placed the same shifting system
in Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s as well as the Grand Cherokee in the
2012-14 model years.
While it is not yet confirmed that this unconventional shifter was the
cause, this is not the first documented case of vehicles with them rolling
away after drivers mistakenly placed the car into neutral while attempting
to engage the parking gear. At the time of the recall’s issue, Fiat
Chrysler said they were aware of 41 injuries that were related to the
shifter system. The automaker has
announced in a statement that they “will be conducting a thorough investigation” of
the incident that resulted in the death of Mr. Yelchin.
When Your Car has a Defective or Recalled Part
The automotive industry is subject to one of the highest number of safety
recalls of any industry in the world. The failure of even some smaller
parts can cause serious injuries or even death of consumers. In certain
cases, even a feature that does function properly may be confusing and
cause injuries when drivers are not sure how to use it correctly.
If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of a confusing or dangerous
auto feature, you could be eligible for compensation. It is strongly advised
that you retain a personal injury lawyer who can help guide you through
your claim in order to obtain maximum compensation for your injuries.
